3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Your 3 day desert trip from Marrakech begins in the morning with a private pickup from your riad or hotel. As Marrakech gradually disappears behind you, the road begins climbing into the High Atlas Mountains.

The journey across the Tizi n’Tichka Pass is an experience in itself. The landscape changes with every turn, revealing deep valleys, mountain peaks, and small Berber villages scattered across the hillsides. By late morning, you reach Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most remarkable fortified villages. Walking through its narrow earthen streets feels like entering another century. The ksar was once an important stop along the ancient caravan routes linking the Sahara with Marrakech and beyond.

After breakfast, your journey continues east toward the Sahara.

The first stop is Tinghir, where one of Morocco’s most beautiful oases stretches between the mountains. Palm trees, farmland, old kasbahs, and traditional villages form a green corridor through the desert landscape.

From Tinghir, the road leads to Todra Gorge, where enormous limestone cliffs rise dramatically on either side of the canyon. Standing between these towering walls gives you a real sense of the scale and power of the landscape. You can take a peaceful walk along the gorge, photograph the cliffs, and enjoy the cool air before continuing your journey.

As you travel farther east, the landscape becomes drier and more open. You eventually reach Rissani, a historic desert town that once served as an important center of trans-Saharan trade. Its traditional atmosphere offers a glimpse into a side of Morocco that feels far removed from the busy streets of Marrakech.

Then, gradually, something begins to change.

At last, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to rise on the horizon, signaling that the Sahara is finally within reach.

You have reached Merzouga.

Here, your luggage is transferred to a 4×4 vehicle while you begin your camel ride into the dunes. Slowly crossing the golden sand as the sun begins to descend is one of the defining moments of this Marrakech desert tour 3 days.

As the sun sets, the dunes change from golden to orange, then deep red. The noise of the outside world disappears, replaced by the soft movement of the camels and the vast silence of the desert.

Your final day begins before breakfast.

Wake up early and climb a nearby dune to watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi. As the first rays of light reach the desert, the dunes slowly change color, creating a peaceful moment that is difficult to describe until you experience it yourself.

After breakfast at camp, you leave Merzouga behind and begin the journey back toward Marrakech.

The return journey takes you through the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s great oasis regions. Thousands of palm trees follow the valley, surrounded by ancient villages, kasbahs, and cultivated fields. It is a remarkable reminder that even in one of the world’s driest environments, communities have built thriving lives around water and agriculture.

Continuing west, you reach Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the Sahara. Here, you can stop for lunch and take some time to explore the city or visit the area around the famous film studios, depending on your interests and available time.

The final part of the journey takes you back across the High Atlas Mountains.

The mountains that welcomed you at the beginning of the adventure now mark your return to Marrakech. Along the way, there is time for relaxed photo stops, coffee, and short breaks to enjoy the changing scenery.
