Your 2-day desert tour from Fes begins early in the morning with a private pickup from your riad or hotel. As Fes slowly disappears behind you, the road leads south toward the Middle Atlas Mountains, where Morocco begins to reveal a completely different side of itself.
Your first stop is Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town known for its red-roofed buildings, clean streets, and cool alpine atmosphere. Often called the “Switzerland of Morocco,” Ifrane feels surprisingly different from the traditional cities you may have visited.
From there, the road continues toward the cedar forests around Azrou. Towering cedar trees surround the road, and if you’re lucky, you may spot the famous Barbary macaques moving through the forest. Take some time to stretch your legs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and experience this quieter corner of Morocco.
As you continue south, the landscape gradually becomes more dramatic. Mountains give way to wide valleys and rocky plateaus before the road reaches the spectacular Ziz Valley. You leave the vehicle behind and climb onto your camel for a memorable ride across the Sahara. Slowly moving between the dunes, you’ll watch the desert change color as the sun begins to disappear. At a high dune, you’ll have time to stop and watch the sunset spread across the endless sand.
After dark, you continue to your desert camp. A traditional dinner awaits, followed by music around the campfire and a peaceful evening beneath a sky filled with stars.

As the first sunlight reaches the dunes, the Sahara slowly changes from deep orange to golden yellow. Sunrise here is worth waking up for, and it offers one of the quietest moments of your Fes to Merzouga desert tour.
After breakfast, you can return to Merzouga by camel or choose a 4×4 transfer for a more comfortable ride. Your driver will then meet you and begin the journey back toward Fes.
